Manatees Are Prey
A manatee is classified as prey, not a predator. These gentle giants do not hunt other animals.
Why Manatees Are Vulnerable
- Large and Slow: Their size and slow movements make them easy targets for predators.
- Herbivorous Diet: Manatees eat plants, so they never hunt for food.
- Known Predators: Young manatees are especially at risk from alligators and crocodiles. Larger sharks can occasionally pose a threat. Humans are not natural predators, but boat strikes and habitat destruction are major human-caused dangers.
Vital to the Ecosystem
Even as prey, manatees play an essential role. Their grazing helps shape aquatic plant communities, and their place in the food web supports the balance of coastal and river ecosystems.
