Bald eagles are opportunistic predators, meaning they will eat whatever prey is available and easy to catch. Their diet primarily consists of fish, which they catch by plunging into the water from a great height. Some of their favorite fish species include salmon, trout, bass, and carp. Bald eagles also hunt small mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, and prairie dogs. They may also scavenge on carrion, or dead animals. In addition to these main food sources, bald eagles occasionally hunt birds, reptiles, and even insects.
