Orangutans are not actually orange! While the name means "person of the forest" in Malay, their color is more variable.
Variable colors: Orangutans range from reddish-brown to blonde.
Pigment: Their color is determined by pheomelanin, the same pigment that gives humans red hair.
Sunlight and diet: Color can change over time due to sun exposure and a fruit-based diet.
Not all are orange: The bright orange stereotype mostly applies to Sumatran orangutans, which tend to be more vibrant than Bornean counterparts.
Their variety of colors makes orangutans even more fascinating.
