Wat is een kamelrijder?

A camel jockey is a person who rides a camel during a camel race. Historically, this practice involved using very young children, often under the age of ten, because lighter riders were believed to make camels run faster.

Why Child Jockeys Were Banned

The use of child jockeys has been banned in many countries due to serious ethical concerns:

  • Exploitation of children: Children were often taken from their families and forced to work in dangerous conditions.
  • Health risks: They faced dehydration, heatstroke, and serious injuries from falls.
  • Lack of education: Lives dedicated to racing prevented them from attending school or pursuing other opportunities.

Camel Racing Today

Most camel races now use robotic jockeys or adult riders. However, the use of child jockeys remains controversial. Some argue it is a cultural tradition that should be respected, while others insist it is a form of child exploitation that must be stopped.
